Arnside and the Kent estuary on Morecambe Bay
On your doorstep

Morecambe Bay

Morecambe Bay stretches from the south west coast of Cumbria to Fleetwood in Lancashire, taking in coastal towns such as Grange-over-Sands and Morecambe. The lodge is on the edge of an area of outstanding natural beauty, with the lovely coastal villages of Silverdale and Arnside right on your doorstep.

Lake cruise boat on Windermere
30 min drive

The Lake District

The Lake District needs little introduction and is only a short drive or bus journey away. No trip to the Lakes would be complete without a boat trip on Windermere, just 30 minutes from the lodge. For the more adventurous, the fells offer some of the most dramatic walking in the UK.

Devil's Bridge over the River Lune, Kirkby Lonsdale
20 min drive

Kirkby Lonsdale

One of the prettiest market towns in the north, tucked between the Lakes and the Dales. Browse the independent shops, stroll down to the medieval Devil’s Bridge over the River Lune, then follow the riverside path up to Ruskin’s View, the scene Turner famously painted.

Sizergh Castle, National Trust
20 min drive

Sizergh Castle

A medieval manor at the gateway to the Lakes, still home to the Strickland family after more than 750 years. The gardens hold the National Trust’s largest limestone rock garden, glorious in autumn when the acers turn, plus a café, wild play trail and walks onto Sizergh Fell. House open March to October.

What to do

A few of our favourite days out

You’ll never be short of things to do in the local area. Here’s just a small sample of the places we love when we’re out and about.

Red deer at Leighton Moss nature reserve
10 min drive

Leighton Moss Nature Reserve

On the edge of Morecambe Bay, the RSPB’s Leighton Moss has the largest reed bed in north-west England and is home to otters, bearded tits, marsh harriers, egrets and red deer. There are activities and events all year round to inspire nature-loving families.

View from Warton Crag nature reserve
20 min walk

Warton Crag

The crag overlooks Warton village, an easy walk from the lodge with two pubs and a brewery. Its limestone, grassland and woodland are nationally important for butterflies and moths, and peregrines nest in the old quarry. From the top you’ll see across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland hills, and on a clear day the Isle of Man.

Carnforth Station, the setting for Brief Encounter
1.3 miles

Carnforth Station and Brief Encounter

Carnforth station was the setting for David Lean’s 1945 classic Brief Encounter, and it’s been lovingly restored. Stand under the famous platform clock, watch the film in the little vintage cinema, then have tea and cake in the recreated 1940s Refreshment Room. Check opening times before you go.

Waterfall on the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail
30 min drive

Ingleton Waterfalls Trail

Our favourite taste of the Dales: a 4.3 mile circular walk through ancient woodland and limestone gorges, past a string of waterfalls including the magnificent Thornton Force. Allow two to four hours and wear good boots, as there are plenty of steps. Dogs welcome on a lead; not suitable for pushchairs.
